May 2006

Wow, has the time flown I can’t believe I have been doing this for almost two and a half years. That old adage is certainly true; time does fly when you are having fun. I have provided temporary childcare for so many families in so many places: Arlington, VA; Vienna, VA; Reston, VA; Chantilly, VA; Rockville, MD; Ashburn, VA; Smith Mountain Lake, VA, Scottsdale, AZ; Sanibel, FL; St. Petersburg, FL; Ashville, NC; Nellys Ford, VA, Abbott, ME; Ocean Pines, MD; Crownsville, MD; Duck, NC; New Jersey; Westport, CT; Washington, DC and Long Island, NY. Boy do I have a lot of library cards! Yes it does seem a bit Virginia heavy but don’t be discouraged I will go most any place. I do consider Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC to be my “home area” because I live so close and have lived in this area for a long time.

During my life I have lived in New Jersey; Kentucky; Washington, DC; Maryland and Virginia. While in Kentucky I had my first babysitting experience this would be about the mid 1970’s, I watched Evan and his sister. Here is a picture of Evan and me. Evan has just become a father to a beautiful baby girl.

I graduated high school in Rockville, MD and went away to Frostburg State University where I got a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. I started substitute teaching in the Montgomery County School system. At the same time I was helping out a newly divorced mother who was going back to work for the first time in years, I would meet the kids after the bus dropped them off and stay with them until she got home. At this time I met Mimi, who became my best friend. She was working as a live-in nanny. It looked like fun so I decided to look into this nanny business. I met a wonderful family through an agency and I was excited. I decided to do this for a year then actively seek a teaching job. Boy was I wrong; I didn’t count on loving this so much. When I started with this family they had one 3 month old baby girl. When I left nine years later she had been joined by two brothers and two sisters. Leaving these kids was the hardest choice I ever made, but I wanted to make a change in my life I moved into temporary child care by accident when word got around that I could fill holes for vacationing nannies. I found that I really enjoyed going to different places, meeting different families, and filling in where I was needed. It was a nice surprise to me when I realized this is a much needed service. When I found other nannies, who also focused on temporary childcare jobs and I was hooked! Since then I have been delighted to work with newborn singles and twins, toddlers and preschoolers as well as all elementary ages, a few middle school & a couple of high school boys.

I have extensive experience as a substitute teacher in two school systems. I loved being their substitute teacher. I have enjoyed not only positions as the regular classroom teacher, but as well as the special education, music, physical education, media center and art teachers. Children have been a part of my life since I was a child and I am proud of my ability to relate to children of every age.

My two cats, Gracie and Lanie, and I live in Ocean Pines, a community just outside of Ocean City, Maryland. I bought my house 5½ years ago as a weekend retreat, and moved here permanently about three years ago. I volunteered at Hoof Prints in the Sand, a nonprofit therapeutic riding program in Parsonsburg, MD, where I have learned to ride while working with a wide variety of special needs children and adults. I enjoy being with people especially children.

I look forward to working with you. I will treat your children with love and affection while ensuring their health, safety and stability. I would like the opportunity to discuss your family's needs for temporary child care.
